Medication Management in Residential Aged Care
Education

Education of self, colleagues, clients and families incorporates:
- Participating in ongoing education, quality improvement processes and continuing professional development (CPD).
- Providing medication skills education and information to residents, their families and staff.
- Communication and counselling with a resident, family and staff regarding expected therapeutic outcomes. This may include supervision and delegation skills.
- Management skills.
Knowledge
Demonstrate understanding of:
- where to access up-to date medicines information
- where to access and familiarity with CMI
- commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) e.g. initiatives in relation to medicines
- commitment to life-long learning and development of competencies
- different education models and modes e.g. short courses, e-Learning, in-service, from other professionals
- how to document CPD
- commitment to ongoing involvement of client and family in care decisions (good QUM!).
Skills
Demonstrate ability to:
- access appropriate ongoing professional development to ensure medication competence
- reflect and critically appraise professional journals and readings for relevant ongoing learning and professional development
- maintain a professional learning portfolio
- coach other staff and facilitate learning opportunities within the workplace
- use CMI as a counselling tool, and
- provide appropriate medicine information for residents / families and others.
